ClaimLogic Live Q&A – In a massive transfusion, why are only two units of blood paid?

massive transfusion

Q&A Session – 28 August 2025

Q: I claimed every unit of blood in a massive transfusion, but only two got paid — why?

A: When billing for massive transfusion, it’s important to know that Item 13706 technically covers transfusion episodes, not individual units of blood transfused.

  • Scope: All transfusions in intensive care.
  • Details:
    • TN.1.7 – Item 13706 covers transfusion of blood, platelets, white blood cells, bone marrow, or intravenous gamma globulins.
    • It does not cover other plasma products.
    • The MBS definition does not formally limit the number of claims per day, but in practice the item is intended to cover a transfusion episode, which may include multiple units.
    • While more than one transfusion episode in a single day is possible, Services Australia applies a practical limit of two claims per calendar day.
  • ⚠️ Important: There is currently no MBS item for massive transfusion — billing multiple (more than 2) units individually will result in rejections.
